FAQs

Braun Series 5 FAQs

What's the difference between foil and rotary shavers?
Rotary shavers are designed to work with cyclical movements while Braun foil shavers are designed to work with efficient sideways movements on the skin giving perfect control and precision. The foils protect the skin from irritation and are specifically designed to deliver the most thorough and comfortable shave from Braun.

What's the difference between the different Series 5 models?
The 5090cc model comes with high quality metal surfaces and has the most advanced display among Braun Series 5 shavers: a very precise 5 level battery status indicator with low charge warning as well as a travel lock and hygiene indicator. On top, the 5090cc features the advanced Intelligent Clean&Charge Station from Braun: it cleans, charges, lubricates and selects cleaning program at the touch of a button - so your shaver feels like new every day. For more information about the rest of the Series 5 range, please consult the Series 5 Model overview.

Why would I need a Clean&Charge Station when I can clean my Series 5 shaver under tap water?
Our tests show that cleaning your shaver with a Clean&Charge Station is significantly more hygienic than cleaning it under the tap. It's also more convenient: at the touch of a button your shaver is cleaned, charged and lubricated automatically.

I already have a Cleaning Center from my previous Braun shaver (Syncro, Activator, 360, etc.). Can I use it with the new Series 5 shaver?
No, the Series 5 marks the introduction of a new generation of shavers with fully revamped technology and can’t be used with previous Cleaning Centers.

Can I buy a solo shaver and upgrade with a Clean&Charge Station later?
No, shaver and Clean&Charge Station are designed to interlink during the cleaning procedure. Shavers being sold without the Clean&Charge Station, don’t have the technology to connect accordingly.

How often do I need to exchange the Clean&Charge refill cartridge?
If you clean your shaver with the Clean&Charge Station twice a week, you will only need to replace the refill cartridge every 2 to 3 months to experience a shaver like new, every day. The Save & Subscribe option from Amazon allows you to subscribe for a regular home delivery and at the same time save 10% on the price of the Clean&Charge refill. You don't have to think about it and always have a Clean&Charge refill available when you need it.

Do you have any recommendation on how to shave with an electric foil shaver?
We recommend that you shave before you take a shower. After a few days without shaving, for example over a weekend, you should trim your stubble before you shave. Stretch the skin and shave against the direction of beard growth. At all times, hold the shaver at right angles (90°) to your skin. In difficult to shave areas like under the nose you can also use the MultiHeadLock switch to lock the shaver head and manually set one of five available shaver head angles as it suits best to your needs. Keep the pressure even to achieve the most thorough and comfortable shave from Braun. To trim sideburns, moustache or beard, Series 5 features an integrated precision trimmer with superior cutting performance. In order to use this comfortable and precise tool, simply slide the trimmer upwards.

How often do I need to change the shaver head?
We recommend replacing all cutter parts every 18 months.

Does the battery have a memory effect as we know it from cell phones or laptops?
No, the Series 5 shavers use a Li-ion battery which has no memory effect. You can recharge it whenever you want and it has a low self-discharge rate (vs. NiMh batteries). Li-Ion batteries are therefore the most powerful and long-lasting batteries available for Braun shavers.

A very good electric shaver

Having used this Series 5 5040s electric shaver for a couple of months now I can definitely say that it is a very good product. This is the first electric shaver I have owned. I have used a safety razor for over 40 years and I thought that I would continue to do so, using the electric razor occasionally. However, this shaver is so good that I use it all the time. I have been completely converted. I have no hesitation in recommending this shaver.

Very good after sales support

I bought this shaver just over a year ago and it has developed an electronic problem four times. Howevet it is an excellent shaver, and despite having sent it back for service repair three times it is testament to excellent after sales support that I still feel positive about this product. The service centre support is very good, and has returbed the repaired shaver to me within 4 or 5 days. After the ladt malfunction they have decided to send me a replacement shaver. Full marks to Braun. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Design

Item has been bought as a Xmas gift but not in receipt of yet. The design tools ok albeit deceptive as the razor does seem to contain the external connectors to work with a clean and charge system. However the reality I am told is that it doesn't contain the right 'chip' set so you can't work / charge from a clean and charge system [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Excellent products as expected!

I have used Braun razors for 50 years now and have still got my 1972 £20 top of the range version. I recently bought a Series 3 3080s which was somehow lost and was then replaced with this Series 5 5040s as I had found that shaving in the shower was brilliantly effective and still lasted all day. I can highly recommend it!

smooth shave every time with minimal application

I was a little surprised on first use of the Braun Series 5 5040S as to the noise levels generated compared to a quieter Philishave that I had become accustomed to, but this is a small negative when you compare the results. I rarely allow much time for shaving, and found that with the Philishave I had to repeat shaving activity several times over to get the desired cut, but the Braun Series 5 5040S shaved smoothly in a fraction of the time, the contours of the blades seemed to adapt effortlessly to my facial geography. I'm always sceptical about claims that such shavers can be used to good effect in wet shaving conditions on a specific setting, and my default preference is not to wet shave, but clearly on trialling this facility the Braun Series 5 5040S is as capable as per manufacturer claims when using gel. I would be pleased to continue using the product going forward, as my neck does not show the usual reaction after shaving which I previously experienced. Ticks all of the Boxes!

The Braun Series 5 5040 Rechargeable Wet and Dry Male Foil Shaver is another well-made shaver from Braun. The shaver is well designed, with a button enabling free rotation of the blade or for the blade to be held in place. The top of the shaver comes off easily enough to allow for cleaning, and the shaver also comes with a brush to wipe away any residual hairs. The battery life of the shaver is amazing. After 4 weeks daily use, the battery has still not needed to be recharged. The product is also aesthetically pleasing. The black shine and blue edges give it a professional look which means you won't begrudge the money spent on it.I haven't had any problems shaving with it, and the pivoting head makes for a clean, close shave. I have even borrowed this to my dad who was insterested, as he currently uses a mains electric dry Phillips shaved, as he cannot use a blade due to scars on his neck from an operation a few years back. He was amazed that he could use it in the shower, and that it didn't need plugging in. He was then even more amazed at how close it got his neck around the scars. So he has just bought one!I sometimes have stubble and a beard, and this even works around this very well.I would highly recommend this, it ticks all of the boxes. Good charge, close shave, works with shaving gel and foam, e Inge shower, easy to clean. What more could you want?? Love it! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Braun 5040s vs Gillette

I used to own a electric razor around 5 years ago. A Philips model but one that couldn't be used in the shower, so the Braun 5040s shaver has a definite advantage. One of the reasons I went back to manual razors is the battery life on the Philips model was quite poor and although it was quick and easy to use, it just didn't do a very good job and left my skin quite dry and itchy.I liked the feel of the Braun. Quite sturdy and it felt a quality product and not one that will fall to pieces in a few weeks.Using it was quite easy and self explanatory. Mine did not come charged and as is standard, it came with a two pin plug which unfortunately I do not have in my house so I needed to purchase an adapter before I could use.To be scientific, I decided to test this product over a period of 2 weeks. On week 1, I grew my beard and used a manual razor (Gillette). On week 2, I grew it again and used the Braun 5040s and compared. In terms of a quality shave, the manual razor won. While the Braun did a good job, it just didn't feel as good as the manual shave. However, the Braun still did a very acceptable job. It was quiet and once I had fiddled around adjusting the head, it was comfortable to use. I also did not suffer any irritation around my skin which is a definite plus and huge improvement on my old razor.Cleaning it involved putting it under running water and leaving it to dry which was ideal. In terms of storage, I'd like some kind of holder to be included in the box. I ended up putting it inside the supplied soft cloth bag and in a cupboard in between uses. As it's designed to be used in the shower, some form of holder would have been ideal. Shaving for me is quite a spontaneous task and I prefer just to have the razor inside the shower rather than hop out into the cupboard to get it.As a minor point, I'd like a better battery indicator - one that provides more detailed use of how long the razor will last for. As I need to charge it in another room, I don't want to run out of power half way through a shave and not be able to finish off until it's charged again.Overall, I'm impressed with the Braun. It is quite expensive but I think you'd eventually make your money back as you don't need to keep buying expensive replacement blades for the manual razors. The quality of the shave was good and I think it's a product I'll be using in conjunction with my other manual razor rather than replace it altogether. closest it's ever been.

The first thing I noticed about the razor is its weight, it is a little heavier then my last one but you can feel the quality of it, It feels well made and solid. It comes with a protective head cover which is a bit weak looking and could easily snap and a fabric case with a draw string which is a bit fiddly if you're just getting out the shower, If I'm honest I really wish companies would supply a hard travel case especially given the cost of a high end shaver. With one hours charge it was ready to use. I usually shave dry with an electric razor so that's what I did to start with. No electric razor can cut as short as wet shave with a bladed razor but after trying this I was amazed at how close this got, it's almost like a wet shave. However, the other thing with this razor is that because it's is a one piece spring loaded foil head it doesn't move around the contours of my face as well as I'd expect, the head does tilt from side to side but only by pre determined increments so I felt like I was going over a few times.I then decided to try using it with foam/gel and it felt even closer and smoother. The biggest let down with the shaver is the precision trimmer which is a sliding mechanism and I found it difficult to get in a position to use to the point I couldn't really call it precision. In short it's a really well made bit of kit that does the job it was designed to do very well. Battery life is excellent, lasting well over its stated time and when shaving with foam/gel it's the closest shave I've ever had from an electric shaver and I think it's excellent value for money. a first class shave

I've never really got on with electric shavers always prefering to have a good, close wet shave. However I'm now totally converted.when i received my bzzkit with a Braun series 5 wet and dry my first impression was good looking packaging with a good looking product. Still i remained very doubtful that it would be up to the job.when i first used the shaver i wasn't sure if it was actually removing hair until i felt where I'd shaved, it is so powerful and smooth you can barely feel anything when using. Even used as a dry shaver it gives a finish which rivals if not beats an excellent wet shave. It's perfect for frequent use, no rashes or discomfort even for sensitive skin.whilst this shaver is at the more expensive end of the range you really do get what you pay for, exceptional quality product and exceptional quality shave.thank you Braun, i will never go back.
